Stocks Shares ISA FAQs

What is an Individual Savings Account (ISA)?

ISA stands for Individual Savings Account, and is a government scheme allowing individuals to hold cash, shares, and unit trusts free of tax on dividends, interest and capital gains. You can deposit up to £20,000 into an ISA each tax year, and this limit is shared across all of the ISAs that you have open.

At Moneybox, we offer a Cash ISA, an Open Access Cash ISA, a Stocks & Shares ISA, and Lifetime ISAs (both Cash and Stocks & Shares).

What is the difference between a Stocks & Shares ISA and a Cash ISA?

A Cash ISA earns interest on your savings and carries no investment risk. With a Stocks and Shares ISA, you choose where to invest your money in the stock market – giving you the potential for higher long-term returns, but with the risk that your money can go down in value as well as up. Both are tax-free wrappers, so you pay no tax on any gains or interest earned inside either account.

Is a Stocks and Shares ISA safe?

How safe a Stocks and Shares ISA feels depends on your attitude to risk. Investments held within a Moneybox Stocks and Shares ISA are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £85,000, meaning your money is protected if Moneybox were to go out of business. However, unlike a savings account, the value of your investments can fall as well as rise – this is normal for stock market investing and is why a Stocks and Shares ISA is best suited to a longer-term investment horizon of five years or more. Find out more about FSCS protection.

What can I invest in?

Moneybox has worked with experts to offer you three Starting Options – Cautious, Balanced and Adventurous. All you need to do is pick one based on your attitude to risk and return.

Each Starting Option contains a mix of tracker (mutual) funds. If you’d like to, you can customise the asset allocations of our suggested Starting Options to create a personalised portfolio. However, you should bear in mind that our Starting Options have been carefully designed by investment experts to optimise risk and return for the selected risk appetite. Please make sure you fully understand how changing your allocation could impact your investment return and risk level before making any changes to these allocations.

How much can I invest in a Stocks and Shares ISA?

You can invest up to £20,000 per tax year in a Stocks and Shares ISA. This allowance is shared across all your ISA accounts – including any Cash ISA or Lifetime ISA – and resets each year on 6 April.

What does the Moneybox Stocks and Shares ISA cost?

What does the Moneybox Stocks and Shares ISA cost?

There are three types of fee to be aware of:

Subscription fee: £1 per month. This covers all your Moneybox investment accounts, so if you hold multiple accounts you still pay just £1 per month.

Moneybox platform fee: 0.45%, charged monthly on the value of your investments.

Fund provider fees: These vary by fund. See all fund fees on our funds page.

You can withdraw free of charge.

Can I transfer an existing ISA to the Moneybox Stocks and Shares ISA?

Yes – you can transfer an existing Stocks and Shares ISA or Cash ISA from another provider to Moneybox. Transfers don't count as a new contribution and won't affect your annual allowance. Transfers can be initiated in-app.

Can I open a Stocks and Shares ISA if I already have one elsewhere?

Yes – you can hold more than one Stocks and Shares ISA at the same time, giving you greater flexibility over how you invest. Just ensure your total contributions across all ISAs remain within the £20,000 annual allowance.

Do you give financial or investment advice?

We aren’t able to offer financial advice, so you’ll need to make sure that your investment allocations are right for your personal circumstances and financial goals. Moneybox is also a self-directed platform, meaning we do not make any investment decisions on behalf of our customers.
