AI, blockchain and sustainability are the most in-demand investment themes among customers

Two-thirds want more fixed-income exposure and access to high-dividend investments

February 21, 2024: Saving and investing app, Moneybox, has doubled the number of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) available on the platform following growing customer interest in thematic investing.

Available now to all customers with a Stocks & Shares ISA, Lifetime ISA or General Investment Account, the twelve new ETFs cover a selection of future themes such as artificial intelligence (AI), carbon transition and blockchain technology.

The addition of these new ETFs follows a recent survey of over 2,000 Moneybox customers which found that AI (70%), sustainability (38%) and blockchain technology (23%) were some of the most sought after investments for 2024.

Brian Byrnes, Head of Personal Finance at Moneybox, comments: “At Moneybox we believe in providing access to themes and sectors that align to our customers personal interests and values via lower cost tracker funds. These new ETFs will give customers even more choice and flexibility when it comes to building a diversified investment portfolio.

“Thematic investing is a great way to gain exposure to emerging sectors and industries. And, while the full potential of these themes may take some time to be realised, their influence stretches to all corners of global financial markets.

“Some analysts forecast artificial intelligence alone to grow by twenty times its current market capitalisation of nearly $100 billion USD over the next decade. Additionally, with only twenty-six years left until the Paris Agreement’s 2050 deadline, ambitions for a low carbon economy have never been more of a concern and priority amongst investors.

“While mass adoption of these themes may take time and therefore merits a long term investment strategy, our customers will now have an opportunity to invest not only in companies that will benefit from these emerging themes, but also the companies responsible for building the technologies required to see them evolve.”

Following an internal screening and selection process, including gauging customer interest in various sector surveys, Moneybox selected these twelve funds following input and analysis from a third-party investment consultant.

“Diversification remains an essential part of investing, helping to manage risk and smooth out the effects of volatility,” adds Byrnes. “Some investors achieve this through spreading their money over a range of different themes and sectors while others may choose to invest across a variety of asset classes and as such we are delighted to offer more fixed income options via this expansion.”

Moneybox’s survey also found that over two-thirds of customers (69%) wanted more fixed-income exposure, while 65% were looking for greater access to high dividend-paying investments.

“Following the highest interest rates we have seen in over a decade, it is unsurprising that more people are looking to increase their fixed income allocations, adding bond ETFs to their investment portfolios alongside emerging trends like AI and blockchain.”
