Our mobile teams build the Moneybox iOS and Android apps. They bring to life the work from across the wider team and play a huge part in making what you see today when you log into your Moneybox app! We’re catching up with Android developer Teo about his role at Moneybox and his work on our Pension product, since joining us in February 2020.

What exciting things are you working on?

One of the things we’re currently working for our customers on is a brand new, exciting, and very technically challenging feature! Beautifully designed by our UI/UX team, it’s a template for a survey-style tool that allows us to ask questions and collect inputs of various types from users. This new format allows us to offer much more tailored and useful results than what we currently support and we can’t wait to get it live and be able to show it!

What is the biggest challenge for team Android day to day?

From my point of view, the biggest day to day challenge is finding the right balance between responsibilities. As a member of the Android team, there are a number of tasks on our plate each day. Besides the development work and code reviews, we also have regular meetings and discussions about the design of upcoming features, from both UI/UX and software perspectives. We also provide support to our own Customer Support team. Although it’s challenging, it’s also exciting and a great opportunity to grow!

Do you get the opportunity to be involved with other areas of the business?

Absolutely! Since the mobile teams have a very central position in the business, we also have plenty of opportunity to interact with other teams. As we go through the development cycle, we are regularly involved with the Product, Design, backend, and QA teams. We can also help out our Customer Support team to resolve issues, or work with our Platform team to help define the more significant app features.

What is your ideal work day?

This might be a very controversial opinion but the ideal work day for me is one with few or no meetings. It’s always great when you know what you need to do and you’re free to work without any distractions or context switching. It allows me to fully focus on the task at hand and that’s when I’m most productive.

What is your greatest achievement at Moneybox?

My greatest achievement at Moneybox so far has probably been joining the Retirement team. I was still fairly new to the company at the time I was invited to join, so I really appreciated the opportunity and the trust. Our team has worked hard to deliver some of our most exciting features to users: reward shares and our pension prize draw!

What is the best thing about working at Moneybox?

Without a doubt, it’s the people. They are some of the brightest, hard-working, and open-minded people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. There’s great communication between the teams and everyone is always ready to lend a hand. The fortnightly Deliveroo credit is a close second, though.

With a busy work schedule, how do you stay on top of your professional development/or learning?

As a team, we’re always trying to stay on top of the latest technology trends and be as efficient as possible. Even though we have a busy schedule, learning is always part of our everyday as we encounter new challenges and try to improve things. Besides work, I also try to dedicate a bit of time each week to learning about new technologies in the field, such as the new Jetpack Compose framework or Dagger Hilt.
