What is a General Investment Account?

  • A General Investment Account is a simple way to invest outside of tax wrappers like a Stocks & Shares ISA - which you might want to do if you've reached your annual ISA allowance.
  • With the Moneybox General Investment Account, you can invest in thousands of global companies through our range of tracker funds.
  • You can deposit up to £85,000 a week into our General Investment Account, with access to our full fund range including global and emerging market shares, technology, property, healthcare and more.

What else should I know about the Moneybox General Investment Account?

  • You can start investing with as little as £1.
  • You must be 18 years or over and a resident in the UK (and not a US citizen).
  • You won't get the same tax breaks as a Stocks & Shares ISA - but you only pay tax on gains above £3,000, subject to having no other investments. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may be subject to change in the future.

General Investment Account vs. Stocks & Shares ISA

  • With a Moneybox General Investment Account you can invest up to £85,000 a week and you'll pay tax on investment gains above £3,000 - subject to having no other investments.
  • With a Stocks & Shares ISA, you can invest up to £20,000 each tax year and you won't pay tax on any of your gains because it's classed as a 'tax wrapper'. ISA and tax rules apply.

Moneybox guide to investing

It's important you know

Capital at risk. All investing should be for the longer term. The value of your investments can go up and down, and you may get back less than you invest. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may be subject to change in the future.

A 25% government penalty applies if you withdraw money from a Lifetime ISA for any reason other than buying your first home (up to £450,000) or for retirement, and you may get back less than you paid into your Lifetime ISA.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Payments you make into your pension won’t be accessible until the minimum pension age (currently 55, increasing to age 57 from 2028). Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may be subject to change in the future.
